Project Description

The Aging in Rural Community project is a community-driven initiative aimed at engaging rural seniors and their communities in designing and implementing their own social innovation solutions for an aging rural population to ultimately allow seniors to stay in their communities longer. Moving seniors programming to a community level will bring seniors in as equal decision-makers, co-creators and investors in developing rural aging solutions based on the local needs and priorities of rural communities.

Expected Outcomes & Benefits

All projects go through a selection process to ensure they will improve the quality of life for Albertans. This project meets this objective through the following outcomes and benefits:

  • Engaging seniors as consultants in decision-making on rural aging needs will create efficient and tailored aging solutions based on community needs and priorities
  • Develop a model, complete with customized resource and planning tools, to use in other aging projects around the province
  • Keeping seniors in rural communities adds vitality to communities through increased economic opportunities for new business and service ventures by creating demand, identifying community interests and service gaps
