Project Description

In this project, the Rural Alberta Development Fund invested in a new, hands-on community-based leadership training program for Alberta’s Aboriginal communities. Administered through the Banff Centre’s Nexen Chair in Aboriginal Leadership, it brought together five Aboriginal community partners and a host of stakeholders and community supporters. Together, they built a tool box of skills and educational materials for rural Aboriginal leaders. Leaders are now applying these tools and skills in their communities to foster sustained, self-determined social and economic development.

Expected Outcomes and Benefits

All projects go through a selection process to ensure they will improve the quality of life for Albertans. This project meets this objective through the following outcomes and benefits:

  • Development of a program that can be transferred and implemented by other communities
  • Increase involvement of young adults in Aboriginal community leadership
  • Increase participation of Alberta’s Aboriginal communities in leadership, governmental, and civic affairs
  • Fill existing gaps in the development of Aboriginal community leaders
  • Leave behind useful resources for current and future leaders
