Project Description

The Sports Coaching Development program works to develop an online coaching education program for rural Alberta school sport and athletic coaches. The program addresses the needs of rural coaches by providing accessible educational experiences and preparing interscholastic coaches for their roles in school sports and athletics. As the first program of its kind in Canada, it is targeting 276 rural schools in Alberta.

Expected Outcomes and Benefits

All projects go through a selection process to ensure they will improve the quality of life for Albertans. This project meets this objective through the following outcomes and benefits:

  • Increase quality of coaching in rural schools
  • Enhance school sports and recreation opportunities for rural youth
  • Increase quality of life in rural Alberta through access to skills development training
  • Provide coaching training in rural schools similar to what is available in urban centres
  • 4 courses are available to junior and senior high school coaches as of September, 2011; Fundamentals of Coaching, Engaging Effectively with Parents, Teaching and Modeling Behaviour and Concussions in Sports-What you need to know.
  • 3 addtional courses were added between April 2012 and February 2013; Athletic Injury, Tobacco-"Be the Norm" and Safety Guidelines for Physical Activity and School Sport.
